Bonnies, Dayton split doubleheader

DAYTON, OHIO - St. Bonaventure and Dayton split a doubleheader on the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 Conference baseball action on Saturday at Stuart Field. The Bonnies took the opener 20-8, but the Flyers came back to win the nightcap 4-1.

St. Bonaventure recorded 20 hits in the opener against five UD pitchers. The Bonnies turned a 2-1 deficit into a 15-2 lead with six runs in the fourth inning and eight in the fifth. They knocked Dayton starter Drew Chesbro out in the fourth after he allowed 10 hits and seven runs. Senior third baseman Josh Paine, freshman outfielder Dan Bratys, sophomore second baseman Craig King and senior first baseman Kevin Ryan each had three hits. Paine and junior shortstop Eric Wilson both drove in four runs and Wilson, who went 2-4, hit his third home run of the season.

Bona senior Kyle Johnson threw his first complete game of the year and improved to 3-1. He allowed four earned runs with four strikeouts.

The nightcap was a completely different story as St. Bonaventure managed only seven hits and a first inning run against Tim Miller, who threw a complete game. Bratys scored the Bonnies' lone run in the first inning when he stole home.

Dayton tagged Bona sophomore Mike McCormack for four runs on nine hits over the first three innings. McCormack is now 2-1. Junior center fielder Matt Landahl and sophomore catcher Damian Blakeley each had two hits in the contest.

St. Bonaventure is now 7-7 while Dayton is 6-11.

 

 

The Bonnies and Flyers will complete the three-game series with a nine-inning contest on Sunday beginning at noon.
